"I loved making the characters - we want to do it every week!"

Porter Croft Primary School

Earlier this year we worked with a lovely Year 4 group at Porter Croft Academy in Sheffield to help them to create their own illustrated stories. The slideshow below displays a taster of the work created during the workshops.

The workshops:

The workshops took place over 4 sessions and involved drawing, painting and writing alongside an artist and a writer as we helped children to create their own illustrated stories.

Hand crafted resources
The children were really intrigued by the hand made resources, and asked lots of questions about how they were made. I was able to tell them about the process of screen printing for the designs on the sketchbooks, and show them the sketches Iā€™d drawn for the flash cards and wooden badges.

Experimental drawing
The group enjoyed the chance to draw freely and experiment with different drawing materials. They particularly seemed to enjoy using the charcoal and graphite, getting really involved as they smudged it into the paper to create their portraits.

Story film and printed book
At the end of the project we gave each member a printed version of their story and created a short story film - their reaction to these outcomes was just brilliant. It made them smile and laugh out loud - they were so pleased to see their drawings and their words brought together like this. It was a great way to end the project.
